The Death Metal comics wouldn't be metal without a sweet Batman in a spiked trenchcoat and a crazy scythe guitar, amirite?! This version of Batman only appears as a variant cover for the Death Metal comics. Taking place in the time after Perpetua is freed and the Source Wall falls, he struggles with the other heroes who survive to take back control of the Multiverses. Batman in this verse uses a black lantern ring to resurrect the dead and leads his army of zombies astride his Batcycle to fight the Batman-Who-Laughs. Pretty sweet imagery!
In the comics, he is mostly portrayed holding a scythe while riding a skeletal Batcycle (guess which review is next??), but I couldn't pass up on this version. He is fairly well articulated despite the trenchcoat limitations and obviously, the guitar is hella sweet. They did a pretty decent job of the paint, but once again miss some small areas like the lack of paint on his shoulder jacket spikes.
Sculpt/Paint: 2/3 Really nicely done sculpt. Seems they took the head sculpt from the Flashpoint Thomas Wayne Batman to give this one a grittier look. The beard stubble once again is...well, I've almost never seen it look right on a figure of this price value. The sculpt works pretty well here to allow movement and the coat moves out of the way pretty easily. In fact, you can take it off, the only downside to that is the little clips on the top show up. The paint is pretty good, but as usual, missing some details that kind of jump out at you.
Articulation: 3/3 (34 points): He's got a pretty good range in all his double joints, and randomly they put a couple of extra thigh cut swivels in him. The transition in his suit makes them pretty seamless, and his hips and feet are fairly easy to pose. The hands are in a perfect position to make him look like he's playing the guitar and really that's all we need from this particular figure! Well, that and the bike riding!
Accessories: 1/1 His guitar, though the strings and some parts are also unpainted where they shouldn't be, is awesome. He holds it fairly well. Mine came bent in the package but a hairdryer and cold water straightened that out. He also has his standard card and stand.
Fun Factor: 2/3 This should be more like Cool factor. If it was based on coolness, he'd get a 3. Because it's also based on the sweet poses I can get him in as well as coolness, it's a 2. He does pretty well but that coat prevents some dynamism. He does sit on the bike with some work on the coat, though it is a bit haphazard.
Verdict: 8/10 Worthy This is worthy to me. Even if I didn't collect any other Dark Metal figures in the line, I'd probably pick this one up for the sweet guitar and rock poses. Even if you just collect cool Batman figures this is a nice one to add to your collection in a display sense. Rock on!
Nice face sculpt and even good lip painting but that stubble... |
Sweet guitar! But where is the paint for the blade and the strings? Also other details here. |
Appropriate split jacket to allow him to ride the bike |
You know sometimes characters meant for capes look weird without them but he's not so bad. |
All you need is rock! |
