McFarlane Toys Penguin - Arkham City

I've previously reviewed the DC Collectibles version of the Penguin from Arkham City here. I do like this version in terms of personality and how it is Arkhamfied to fit the game's aesthetic and darkness. This release I mostly bought for the Solomon Grundy parts, not cluing in early enough that of course they would release a gold label version with some more interesting paint apps. Foiled again like one of Batman's C-class villains!

This version of the penguin purports a more sneering angry face! His accessory umbrella is about the same with more brass instead of silvery paint. He's actually got moving joints on his legs! Wow! That said, Penguin isn't much of an action character, so while you can do some limited things here, it's not over the top. One thing I don't quite get is that his hat isn't removable. His bandaged hand clearly looks like it is meant to both tip his hat and carry it! He's a decent figure all the same if you missed out on the first DC Collectibles penguin or if you just wanted the Solomon parts and he was an alright addition!

Sculpt/Paint 1/3: He's got decent paint on him. He has white accents for the fur effect on his coat, the shoes, bandaged hand and underscarf are all a dingy gray, while the vest is a lighter brown. Compared to the DC Collectibles version though, the paint doesn't stand out as much. The glass bottle embedded in his left eye is opaque, which is a bit disappointing. I gotta say not as impressive a sculpt or paint job as the previous version.

Articulation: 2/3 (26 points) Just like other McFarlane figures, his torso and crotch are mostly a softer plastic that allows more movement of the inner joints. The legs have a bit of spread, the knees are a limited hinge swivel, and the ankles allow a toe thing and some side-to-side movement. This is leagues better than the other version! I like that this one has updated arms (double-jointed) with the bicep swivels and standard hinge swivel shoulders. The neck moves well and the torso can twist and move slightly forward and backwards. They'd have more movement range if they hadn't made the vest and coat one solid overlay piece. Oh well! It does good enough for a penguin character.

Accessories: 1/1 He comes with his standard umbrella, card and stand. I'm a little miffed you can't take the hat off like the previous version, especially since as far as I can tell it's a near identical sculpt and material! He also comes with the coat and head for Solomon Grundy.

Fun Factor: 1/3 He's just fine, and mostly you'll have his arms and umbrella waved around or standing in a pretty vanilla pose. He's an arms dealer, not a gladiatorial melee fighter!

Verdict: 5/10 Limited He's a fairly limited character but good to half if you're a completionist or need an updated version.

This is such a gentlemanly pose for such a
hideous look of contempt!

and yet it's a perfect hat-tipping hand!

A comparison. I much prefer the details of the DC Collectibles one
but the articulation offered is much better.

pretty non-interesting view at the back

Mwwwaa! En Garde!

That's about as far as you go
but does Penguin really need
to do martial arts style kicks and splits anyway?
