McFarlane Toys Ra's Al Ghul - Batman: Arkham City (Build-A-Solomon Grundy)

I've reviewed a Ra's Al Ghul figure before for the more realism-bent Christopher Nola Batman trilogy, but today I finally have a figure of the Arkhamverse version. In an attempt to rid Gotham of its worst criminal elements, Ra's and his league of shadows secretly fund the plan to create Arkham City. Batman, on the heels of the last game having been poisoned by Joker's Titan toxin needs some decades old blood to fight off the side effects, and who better than Ra's to get it from! After a tense encounter, he defeats him and takes some of Ra's blood. He later meets Ra's again when, unsatisfied with how Hugo Strange is handling Protocol 10, sees Ra's plunge his sword through Hugo! The more I think about Arkham games (except maybe Arkham Knight) the more I realize they put in too many villains from Batman's rogue gallery, giving each of them not quite the time they deserved (or maybe too much in Riddler's case).

The figure is pretty close to the game appearance, with some pretty impressive details, such as the well done tattooed dragons on his arms. It's a pretty good figure, and miles better than what I saw of the DC Collectibles release back in the day! After getting Talia Al Ghul from the older figures back in the day and seeing how bad it was, I decided not to buy all the figures. He's got good articulation and is a welcome addition to the Arkham rogues!

Sculpt&Paint: 2/3 This time they did a really good job of the sculpting and painting. There are many more interesting details painted, though none on the boots or belt pieces, which could be better. The sword's engraving could also have used some paint. They did a good job of the armor bulk as a solid piece that allows some movement in the diaphragm but it rides up the neck a little too much.

Articulation: 3/3 Despite the midsection joints, he's got really good range in all his joints. He sports the typical McFarlane joint system with a bit better-hidden shoulder and ankle joints that look a tad more natural. The elbows don't look great and the knees are WEIRDLY super flat. It's as if he lost his kneecaps under the clothing.

Accessories: 1/1 Ra's doesn't need much! He comes with his sword which is really well sculpted but could have been painted a bit, a stand and the card. The cards for these at this point are kind of a joke though, since it's not even art from the source (Game or comic) it's literally just a fairly poor picture of the figure that you've already got. They've gotta stop doing that. I'd rather they spend the money on more accessories or sculpts. He comes with the two arms of the Solomon Grundy figure.

Fun Factor: 2/3 He's got pretty good balance, a well-painted face/hair and is pretty decent. I like it!

Verdict: 8/10 Worthy He's definitely worth it if you're an Arkham City fan since this is a superior figure in every way compared to the Collectibles version (except maybe paint). One thing that I'd add to make this figure better is if they had painted his irises and dragon tattoos with glow-in-the-dark paint. That'd be amazing!

Nice sculpt and paint on the head

Love the greens and brass colours for his armor

Accessory card/stand with build a figure arms for Grundy

Can get him in some nice swordsman
poses which is good!

Decent balance here

One point of contention I have with McFarlane figures that
have long accessories like blades/staves is they almost always
come bent out of shape. Even boiling water/hair dryers don't always fix this and
it's fairly annoying when you're trying to get a good picture and it's all woobly!

Very impressed when they can get a figure
to hold something two-handed especially
a sword!
