Following parallel storylines with the Dark Knights: Metal stories, The Batman Who Laughs has created batarangs for some of DC's heroes with a Joker Toxin that creates corrupted versions of these heroes. These are for Blue Beetle, Jim Gordon (why), Donna Troy, Shazam, Supergirl, and Hawkman. The members infected, like King Shazam, soundly beat the snot out of Superman and Batman in a feat of cunning that is not usually Shazam in nature. In order to infiltrate these Secret Six, Superman purposely infects himself with the toxin to learn of The Batman-Who-Laughs plans. You can see how this isn't a great plan!
The figure is great though. I don't know how close this is to the Superman #1000 from McFarlane produced at the beginning of this line, but I like it! It's got a very solid, bulky chest, and proportions that scream superman. The cape is plastic and pretty solid (oh well), but the look is awesome. I'm tempted to get the 1000 Superman just to compare notes and to have a non-Dark knights metal Superman for him to face off.
Sculpt/Paint: 4/5 Love the look and feel of this one. He's got great proportions, and the skin tones and shades for his eyes to make them infected is so well done. Like all the other symbols on characters for McFarlane, his "S" is sculpted, not painted (always better). His neck looks like he could bulldoze with his head! I feel like that might be one difference from the regular release of Superman #1000.
Articulation: 5/5 (33 points) Same type of McFarlane giant ball double-jointed wrists and ankles that allow for a really nice, stable range of motion. Knees and elbows work well, though they don't quite bend as far as some due to his bulky muscles. I feel less odd about the rubber crotch since it fits with the rest of his suit.
Accessories: 2/5 He comes with the stand (no flight stand?), his card and an extra pair of open claw grip hands to be extra maniacal. I do appreciate the extra hands since this doesn't seem to be a thing with McFarlane, and it should be! Especially with punching characters like Batman. He also comes with the Build-a-Figure legs of the Merciless.
Fun Factor: 3/5 He's really easy to pose around and his cape doesn't get in the way of much. He's got a good balance and I love his villainous expression. Pretty good!
Verdict: 14/20 Good He's a really cool figure. I do lament that most of these always have awkward ab and diaphragm joints and no so well distributed weight, but it's a great addition to make a supervillain! You should definitely get this if you are a Supes fan. It looks great and can easily be customized to make a Bizarro (though I wouldn't be surprised if McFarlane does that sooner than later.
Nice and tattered. I got a strange black scuff mark on mine. We'll see what to do about that! |
It's like they did FaceSwap with an undead Joker! |
Infected Gun show! |
The one hand I can only describe it as beckoning. To what, I don't know. |
