DC Icons - Superboy (Super Sons pack)

Johnathan Samuel Kent is the latest and greatest version of Superboy from the DC Rebirth comics. He is the 10 year old half-Kryptonian child of Superman and Lois Lane who has begun to gradually gain his powers. They are inconsistent powers, and fluctuate with his emotional state, but are impressive nonetheless!

He joins Robin (Damien Wayne) in the comic series Super Sons to fight various foes alongside allies like the Teen Titans. Super sons was actually a comic series created long before Rebirth in 1973. In that older series, it was Clark Kent Jr. (Of Clark and Lois) and Bruce Wayne Jr.(Of Bruce and Talia), who were basically young versions of their fathers.

I like the design of the new Superboy. It's casual somewhat, but has some flare with the hoodie jacket and shorter cape. The facial expression is a bit doe-eyed, but at least it's not completely neutral (read: boring!). His articulation is great and has really good drop down hips. What I like the most about this figure and the Damien Wayne figure (review coming next week!) is that they have FINALLY created a 1/12th scale child superhero in good proportions.

Paint&Sculpt: 4/5 You have to really appreciate some of the fine detail here. All the jacket lines, jean wrinkles and textures are really well done. The paint application isn't bad, but mine had a red splotch on the hair that I filed off and will need a re-touch, along with a couple of other minor spots.

Articulation: 4/5 (27 points):  Pretty standard range for DC icons. Cons: His diaphragm joint only allows for backward movement, not forward. His waist joint isn't a lot better. Very little range. Due to the tiny size of his arms/wrists/ankles/knees, be careful! These joints feel like they could snap easily.
Pros: His drop down hip joints are really good, and the rest of his range isn't bad! The head actually moves up a bit. Fancy that, a flying character that can put his head up (slightly).

Price/Availability: 4/5 Good. You can grab the Super sons 2-pack at the standard price pretty much anywhere: store/online. The price is about the same as well. Cheaper even on Amazon.

Accessories: 3/5 Okay. He comes with three alternate hand sets and a slanted air stand, like Supergirl's. The hand sets are: fist, flat flying hands, relaxed open hands and hands that look like they could hold something...but I don't know what? I don't know that he'd need much else, except maybe Krypto! An alternate heat vision head is definitely unnecessary given how they made Supergirl's.....

Fun Factor: 4/5 It takes a little patience due to his small size and the stiff ankle hinges on my particular figure, but you can get him in a variety of well balanced poses! His cape isn't too big so it doesn't make him overly back heavy either. It also helps he doesn't have the typical dour-neutral face look.

Verdict: 19/25 Good! Another good figure by DC Icons. The articulated range of motion could always be better, and some shading could always be applied, but for your money, it's a really good figure and depiction of Rebirth Superboy.

Not a bad face sculpt

His hip joints are a bit loose on mine, so it takes some
time to get him posed in a wide stance

This took a LONG minute to balance

Size comparison. Pretty good height for 10 year old
Super-kid

Family photo time!

His air stand isn't bad but
it's kinda single purpose
(and this is that purpose)

Look dad! Flying!

"Hmm, my supervision tells me
Damian is still being a a$$hole!"

"Son, it doesn't take super hearing to know that you did in fact NOT
clean your room"

Flight punch!

Old Super-pose

New Super pose (oh dammit Superboy,
not the dab!)

Jus' chillin'

  1. I get that they were going for a more casual/child-like look for Superboy but the rips in his jeans bug me for some reason. It's like "we got you an indestructible top but your jeans are from K-Mart" I'm probably over thinking it.

    1. Haha fair enough! I don't mind them except for the big knee one because when you bend his knee, it looks odd the way it pops out. Apparently, in this version there are times when he is as vulnerable as a normal person cause he hasn't complete grasped his powers (i.e. he can be cut/hurt sometimes)
