DC Icons - Green Lantern (Dark Days)

There are a lot of Green Lanterns, and I like them all, except maybe Guy Gardner...he's kind of a jerk! I enjoy the whole theme of the emotional electromagnetic spectrum, the emotions that manifest the powers, and all the other associated lore. It's neat seeing artists and writers get creative with the kinds of aliens and people that join the various Lantern corps as well.

This particular Lantern is Hal Jordan, maverick air pilot turned Lantern who reminds me a bit of Tom Cruise in Top Gun in personality. They take the design and accessories from his stint in "Dark Days", an 8 issue series that sees Hal Jordan become the leader of the Green Lantern Corps to figure out why the power rings from every colour of the rainbow are dying out.

I'm generally pretty happy with this figure*. It comes in a deluxe set, and unlike Cyborg, I feel there are actually enough parts and pieces that make for a lot of fun photography and display options.
He is an earlier creation in the DC Icons line though, so while his articulation is decent, he doesn't have the drop down hips, and for whatever reason, the ball peg to the head is difficult to turn.
He is painted fairly well, though the ring lacks detail.

*Note: I had a hard time deciding between the Jon Stewart, Hal Jordan and 7 pack Green Lantern figures..but in the end, decided to go with more accessories!

Sculpt&Paint: 3/5 Decent. He is fairly well painted and sculpted. No shading as usual. There are a few spots here and there that are a bit sloppy, and it would've been nice if the ring on his hand was either sculpted better or painted better. As it is, it just looks like a green glob. The only other issue to me is that his head looks as if it had been put into a vice. It's a bit more angular than I'd expect given his depiction in comics.

Articulation: 4/5 Good (27 points). He makes the cut for DC icons with enough range for his knees, wrists, elbows and shoulders. Added bonus: he also has a boot-cuff swivel. The head doesn't look up much, as per usual with Icons. The diagram and waist joints have slightly better range than some Icons since the figure has a leaner physique. The ankle is fine forward and back, but side to side rotates at an angle. Still good though!

Price/Availability: 3/5 Okay. Despite the fact that this figure was released in December of 2015, he is still about the same price online as he was upon first release (about 50 CAD). However, you won't find him in many stores anymore.

Accessories: 5/5 Excellent. To start, he has one pair of more open/lantern holding hands and a green lantern! Add to that, he has a flight/jet type suit and arm canons pulled right from the comic book pages. The flight suit looks a bit funny (though I love the articulated wings!), but it sits well on the figure, and the plastic is translucent enough you can see the head through the bubble. The arm cannons are neat, and he also has another huge green fist accessory. He also has shoulder and book armour pieces which complete the set. All these are not painted, but cast in a translucent green plastic which makes it all work well for him!

Fun Factor: 4/5 Damn fun!  This is a great figure to pose and play with. You can swap accessories you don't want, put him in standard green lantern pose options, and put him in some cool flying poses. The only gripe I have--and it would be hard to lay blame on anyone here--is that he's hard to balance. With all his gear on or even just the flight chest piece, he can't stay posed for more than a second.

Verdict: 19/25 Good. Overall a good figure with standard articulation through a not-so-standard availability and great accessories. Get it and you won't regret it!

Join the Corps!

Sometimes you gotta recharge

Nice details on the lantern (front)

Lantern from the top

The emerald knight!

Zap!

Time to materialize some whoopin'!

Nice balance and kick height!

Splits with no fear!

Boot assembly

Now THOSE boots are made for...well
mostly flying actually!

And line dancing!
The filter was unintentional and
got saved over the original by accident...
sigh!

Can still kick and balance with all that!

Thigh guard assembly

With shoulder pads it looks like he's ready
for an american football game!
Maybe they should do that against the other
lanterns instead of always trying to snuff each other out!

Close up on the shoulder pad. They clip
on quite well despite the simplicity of their design.

Two guns made out of will!

I like they added a hinge with missiles inside to open. A fun
little addition.

The clunky chest piece!

There he is in all his full suited glory!

Nice that you can still see his face!
The crotch piece though? Ouch.

"That's right, Iceman! I AM dangerous!"

Fun with armor: His
shoulder pad also acts as a sort of face mask!

When you need someone bounced out of the Justice League or
Green Lantern Corps....

Look guys! No hands!

If I was a Green Lantern, I'd probably do lazy stuff like
make bowls out of my will cause I didn't run the dishwasher.

In his spare time? Welder

All his accessories! Plus a photobomb. Get outta there, Hal!

  1. Nice, that's a pretty good Hal Jordan. Better than the DC Direct Hal Jordan I have that came out in 2000 and I think has a ripped elbow. I think most Lantern figures have slightly blobby rings, it's just such a small detail.
