DC Icons - Aquaman (Legend of Aquaman)

He's the most ridiculed superhero and founding member of the DC Universe. I feel like I should mention to those that aren't familiar with Aquaman that this superhero has Super strength, Super hearing, Telepathy/Empath connections with sea life, Super durable skin/armor, among his other super powers. He definitely has more going for him than many Justice Leaguers. The negative press he's received maybe lessened somewhat now that he's being played by Game of  Thrones star Jason Mamoa. Though, one could argue his casting is in direct response to DC attempting to make Aquaman edgier and more intense.

Lucky for us, this one is a more classic comic book version. He's based on the Aquaman: The Legend of Aquaman #1 from 1989. This comic was a origin story for the character before he was the King of the Seven seas. The reader follows the meeting of his parents, the discovery of his powers and his time when he first enters the role of Aquaman.

This figure is decent, which impresses me since I have never had any interest in Aquaman except to complete my Justice League collection. His shirt has finely sculpted, shiny metallic orange and his face sculpt and paint is clean and well done. His accessories are great and his sea forker is an elegant weapon. His articulation could be a bit better though.

Sculpt&Paint: 7/10 Good. Now this figure may not be covered in paint and sculpt details, but what it does have it does really well. I definitely like how they did the face AND his alternate, telepathic head. It's so shiny! Like many Icons, the flesh has zero shading, and for whatever reason there is a different

Articulation: 7/10 Okay (25 points). He does have the typical double jointed knees, elbows, two point wrists and ankle with decent rockers. The ab joints though...they're not good. I can't actually swivel the diaphragm joint at all. Add to that, he has no thigh swivel. Though it is less noticeable, he does have the same Superman thigh gap.

Price/Availability: 7/10 Good. You can still get this figure for his regular market price, and in some cases a bit lower. It's available at the usual venues.

Accessories: 4/5 Great. I'm tempted to give this guy a full 5. He's got alternate hands (grabbing and fist hand pairs, and telepath temple-touch hands!), his beautifully sculpted sea forker, and the telepath effect with alternate head to plug in the effect. All well done!

Fun Factor: 3/5 Good. Despite some limitations, this Aquaman looks great, and I love his shiny paint. I couldn't ask for too much more (except more swivels of course!). He can't quite balance on one leg due to loose ankle rockers and being really top heavy in the bulky chest area.

Verdict: 27/40 Good. Engineering of the parts could have been better executed, but overall a very nice figure! Excellent shelf piece to anyone's Aquaman or Justice League collection.

So shiny

Not bad for the accessory department!
It's clear though now I need to buy
a bunch of plastic sea creatures

Epic telepathy!

Mmm, telepathic ice cream cone!

Swim mode!

King mode!

Look at those leg fins

King of the Seven Seas baby!

He probably doesn't need to throw his sea forker

Dang, that Trident of Neptune is sharp!

King, Hero, Rockstar!

  1. That's a cool figure. I'm so very tempted to pick him up sometime. I have a couple other Aquamen but not actually in his classic duds. And that ridiculous telepathy accessory is just too awesome for words so: VUUVUUVUUVUUVUUVUUVUUVUU! (That's the sound his telepathy makes when he summons sea creatures for help)
