NECA Kratos and Atreus 2 Pack - God of War

In 2005, Playstation released the first of the God of War games which would become a mainstay on their platform for years ahead. You play this action-adventure in the role of Kratos, a Spartan warrior who has been used and manipulated by the Greek gods, and quite frankly, is pretty mad about it!
In the other games, he slaughters many of the gods and obtains items along the way. Kratos is usually portrayed as a very angry man, who is shouting and brutally murdering his enemies. Classic Greek stuff. There have been a few games released since then, mostly on the PlayStation 2 or 3.

I was not interested in playing any of the games until a friend really sold me on God of War (2018); how interesting the characters are, as well as the world discovery that you get to do. This God of War game is that Kratos is seeking some redemption, and has a son that has an important role in the game. This smooths out the character I find and makes him more interesting rather than a single-minded, brutal character with no other facets. Anyway, the gameplay, graphics, dive into Norse mythology and the ending make it a really amazing game. Even the flavour dialogue between Atreus and Kratos gives you a deeper look into their characters.

This 2 Pack of figures is an example of when NECA does it all so right. The proportions, sculpt and paint are AMAZING. Seriously I doubt you can do much better even on a bigger scale.  The accessories are plentiful and reflect nearly every part of the combat gameplay. The joints are a bit stuff and you have to be careful, especially with Atreus who has some of the smallest double joints I've seen since the Damien and Superboy 2 pack.  I'll review these two as one, as they have nearly identical qualities in many respects, minus a point of These are top 10 figures for sure!

Sculpt/Paint:5/5 Amazing amazing amazing. The material used for the clothing is a mildly flexible plastic that allows movement and is painted realistically to the game. They really captured Kratos' and Atreus' faces, hair and eyes super well. One of the most eye-catching features on Kratos are his chained forearms, which are so intricate. One thing that feels a little off is Kratos' skin tone. It seems a little too pink. Not a deal-breaker, but worth noting.

Articulation: 4/5 (31 Kratos, 29 Atreus): Really good for both but I'll do them separately.
- Kratos: Has REALLY good range for his double-jointed knees and elbows. He has good shoulder and bicep swivel action, but the shoulders were really stiff on mine. The head is on a lollipop peg that allows him to look up really far up as well as side to side tilt. He has a good waist swivel which sits on a single large ball peg, allowing a little tilt for the torso but not much. His ankle articulation is really good, which is key to any action figure, and also has toe hinges.

-Atreus: A bit different here. He has slight motion in neck and head, but not as much. The shoulders and biceps work well, but it's hard to bend his double-jointed elbows without straining the peg. It seems the plastic is a bit soft. Wrists work well, and he has the same waist joint style Kratos has.
The knees aren't double-jointed but rather have a hinge and swivel. It works pretty well though, and his legs still bend to a good 90 degrees. The ankles aren't quite as useful as Kratos' since the leg wrapping edges of the sculpt interfere.

Overall really good, but a diaphragm or something to allow a bit more waist movement wouldn't have been too bad.

Accessories: 5/5 Both figures come with an amazing assortment of well-detailed weapons, extras and a few hands. Kratos comes with his long knife (fits nicely in the sheath), his shield bracer piece, fully expanded shield (wow is it ever massive), his axe (Leviathan), a frost effect for the axe, his chaos blades with chains, a blade set without chains, 3 fire effects (two with fist imprints, one for blades), a shouting head and the weapon gripping hands. SO MUCH.
Atreus comes with his small knife (fits perfectly in his sheath), bow (with a real string that he can pull!), four separate arrows he can stack in his quiver, and a hand that can grip the arrows for notching them on his bow. Amazing.

Kratos' accessories. So much! So amazing.

The back of the shield looks great!

Atreus' Accessories. Not a ton but all good stuff!

Fun Factor: 5/5
These are really nice figures because they are solid and balance well. The joints are of high quality, not overly loose. The ankles pose well which means lots of stable and dynamic poses, and that combined with the awesome effects and accessories means you're going to have a lot of fun with these two. I find that Kratos is HUGE compared to most of my seven-inch scale Arkham figures, but maybe that's to be expected. He's definitely a top 10 figure, and what few complaints I have are massively outweighed by how good the 2 pack is.

Verdict: 19/20 This is a really good two-pack. I understand that Kratos came out separately and perhaps with a better skin tone match to the game, but honestly with all the accessories and having Atreus in there too is just too much to pass up if you're a fan of the games. Even generally as a figure, these are great. I highly recommend picking this pack up, though at this point they're slightly more expensive (90 CAD) than when they first came out.

Looks good but I think the pink tone
for the skin was a bit much considering
how alabas

These were basically the two expressions of the whole game.
Smiling doesn't work for Kratos I guess!

From the back

Mimir! This talking head
was a fantastic character in the game

That detail though!

His axe hooks into the holder
just like in the game
Knife memories

Nice details on the bracer chains, a symbol
of his enslavement and rage towards the gods

Running!

This piece folds out into his massive Guardian Shield. A gift of
his beloved the first night they met. It can reflect back attacks
and is similar in powers to the Golden Fleece he had.

Extended Guardian shield! Fits really lose though

Rage time!

The frost effect is easy to put on and stays in many poses with
Leviathan.

Decent sidekick and split ability!

Blades of Chaos!

The extra blades with chains are even more detailed, look
cooler and have real chain!

Emulating his spinning attack is awkward in action figure form!

There's those flames!

Rising fire fists!

Time for Atreus, the son

Back view. Really detailed!

All four arrows fit in, even if the bow
is hard to sling around his figure

His knife...

Dad's knife....

Now, THESE are knives!

"umm....."

"BOY!!!!!!!!!"
(This is practically Kratos' catch-phrase in the game)

Can draw an arrow out with minimal
bending!

I think it's so cool he can notch an arrow
with a real string. That's a first
for an action figure I've seen.

Running shot!

Also good splits but not as good balance because of his size,
top-heaviness, and the fact his shoes aren't moulded completely
flat on the bottom. They've got a bit of a curve.

Dad and Boy, ready for
more adventures!
