S.H. Figuarts Shikamaru Nara - Brilliant Strategist

Shikamaru is easily one of my favourite characters in all of Naruto, Naruto Shippuden, Boruto, and Boruto: Blue Vortex. He's smart, kind and one of the best friends of those who are treated as less. It isn't specifically said, but it does seem like he's Naruto's best friend throughout several series. Aside from his unwavering loyalty, he has some unique abilities that he uses well throughout the series. He's by no means very powerful, but does well with what he has. I never imagined that he'd ever be on the list of figures SH Figuarts would make (though I did answer several polls with that answer, so maybe that had an impact??? who knows!). This is a pretty easy figure to pull off, but there are some issues with the faceplates I'll get into shortly. The accessories and poseability are up to a good standard! Now I just need them to make a Shippudden version of Ino and Choji to complete the team! And Asuma couldn't hurt either....

Sculpt/Paint: 2/3 The sculpt on this figure is solid, and everything from a distance looks right. When you get closer, you notice the gaps in the mesh painted parts on the arms and lower legs. There isn't a ton of shaded detail here, though there aren't many mistakes in other places. The faces, though.....some of them are, for the most part, all wrong. It's really just the eyes. They look crazy and do not point in the same direction, making Shikamaru look wacky except from a distance with the head pointed downwards. You'll see in the photos!

Articulation: 3/3 (30+): The figure has crazy good mobility. Shikamaru easily crouches, splits, balances and has great ankle rotation as well as cross-arm use. There is full rotation for the double-jointed knees and elbows, as well as thighs. I don't love the thigh gap parts they used to make the pocket parts but it's alright, I guess!

Accessories: 1/1 For a character like Shikamaru, he has everything you need to capture his aesthetic poses and parts in the Shippuden series. He's got Asuma's lighter (post-death was one of the saddest scenes in Naruto ever), Asuma's wind chakra knife, four separate face plates, four pairs of extra hands, two pocket parts that replace his thigh parts and a flat shadow tendril effect. Great stuff!

Fun Factor: 2/3 I love love love Shikamaru and am glad they made the figure, but if I'm being honest, it is fairly plain, which is his design in this era of Shippuden. He looks less unique, being another Naruto character with a flak jacket and little else to differentiate him aside from his head sculpt and mesh parts. The posing is easy and dynamic, and the accessories look good! He is not flashy, though, if that makes sense!

Verdict: 8/10 Very worthwhile figure, and you definitely need this one for your Naruto shelf. I will suggest maybe either re-painting the eyes on some faces or getting a professional, cause yikes, SH Figuarts dropped the ball on those. Highly recommend!

A very nice set of accessories. I could've also done
with a paper bomb!

Yeesh. Also the mouth shape looks a little odd
which in itself is odd given how basic his mouth
line should be.

Sideways look is better, but still the mouth part

I think this is supposed to be his bored/look in the
cloud look, which is his standard one

Not bad but not sure about the teeth

Is it winking? Is it when he's using a ton of chakra? Also
someone explain to me the significant behind characters
in shonen who shut one eye when they're tired/have used
up a lot of their energy in a battle.

This is a unique way to put a small blade in a character's hand!

Still looks good in poses!

Great balance

The triumph of the brilliant strategist!

Shadow stitching jutsu!

For Asuma

The pockets aren't too bad, but
With the way the small ball joints show, it's a little
off

Head in the clouds!
