McFarlane Toys DC Multiverse - Nightwing (DC Rebirth: Better Than Batman)

Hey! Look! A new Nightwing!

Still one of my favourite characters in the DC Universe, and Best Boy of the Bat-Family. He's still the same Nightwing you know and love from the New 52 and most other comic books lines, with very minor changes to his suit. Instead of mostly all black with a blue chest symbol, he now has blue for his boot tops, hands and mask. Woo! I guess!

Basic pros of this figure: great head sculpt with details put in between hair parts, really good range of movement, and you can clip his escrima sticks to his back. He's also, like all McFarlane figures, reasonable in price with nice paint and details (Is McFarlane trying to do for DC what Classics and Hasbro is doing? If so, consider making more characters outside the Batman comics! I'm not complaining, just a suggestion!)

Basic cons: His sticks have nice detail but a little plain, the chest to leg proportions are kinda off. Reminds me of the Arkham Knight Nightwing figure. I'll add to that by saying I think 7 inches is a proportional ratio that many figures don't seem to have quite right. It's like they are either making the legs too long and thing, or the arms not reaching far enough past the waistline.

Sculpt/Paint: 4/5 Very solid paint job. A couple of dings here and there, and I will say that whatever protective coat they use for McFarlane probably won't stand the test of time, but it's definitely got the right gloss and matte finishes. They definitely surpass Hasbro for face paint details and shading for human faces. I find there are usually small scuffs or paint blobs that prevent absolute perfection. The biggest thing for me though is the strange diaper crotch. It's kinda too long and because it's rubbery that thing is going to stretch over time as you pose it and has the potential to weird a collector out!

Articulation: 5/5 (32 points) He's got all the standard McFarlane joints, and because his suit is all black at the joint parts (mostly) the large ball swivels in the wrists and ankles don't show up as much, though the ankles still do look fairly odd. My only complaint (and it's the same with all of them) is that the diaphragm joint does very little for range while the waist joint is actually pretty good for side to side and swivelling.

Accessories: 3/5 He comes with his two escrima sticks, the center part of the build-a-batmobile, his art card from the Better than Batman volume comic, and a stand. I like the sticks, they have nice sculpting them and clear handle grip areas. They are just plain black, which is fine. Nothing else though aside the standard things every figure comes with and a build-a-piece. I wish he had started the lines by at least including punching hands and/or an alternate head.

Fun Factor: 3.5/5 I'm starting to find I have to be a bit more nuanced on these ratings. Like, don't get me wrong, cool look and fun to pose. I spent an hour while listening to something fiddling with this guy. I do find him a bit top-heavy though, with off-putting upper proportions (plus the diaper crotch). That said, still cool to have and no regrets about getting it.

Verdict: 15.5 Good He's still a very good figure especially if you plan on collecting these or just have lots of 7-inch scale figures you want to put him with. Watch those ankles though! One thing for sure: compared to the first release of the DC McFarlane Toys Batman (Detective Comis #1000) figure...he's Better than Batman.

*mic drop*--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------*crickets*

Pretty good face paint and sculpt. I like that they did
the black line around the white eyes. Makes it pop!

Points for having his
escrima stick storage!

The accessories! The sticks are a bit plain but well
sculpted.
Splits are pretty decent and stable

Pretty stable kick. I was surprised given the
crazy looking ankles.

Props to the design. Very
few figures, even high-end imports
can reach their back and hold a weapon!

Size comparison of my other Nightwings. I'm finding
that these McFarlane figures are tall even for
DC Collectibles 7 inch, and obviously towering over
the DC Icons.

OK, quick rating:
Best natural looking posing: McFarlane
Best looking escrima sticks: Collectibles Arkham City (Back)
Worst face and sculpt break up: Collectibles Arkham Knight (Right)
Best blue insignia and face: DC Icons
