I recently acquired quite a few Tamashii Nations effects pieces as well as the new Ichiraku Ramen diorama so this week I'll be trying to review them all! That said it may not all happen at once. Anyone who knows anything about action figure photography knows that with diorama or effects you can have multiple figures, using multiple accessories with a variety of poses to get some good range of shots, so it takes quite a bit of time to set up everything!
This time I'll be doing the Red version of the Burning flame effects. These are honestly so cool and work well with all the flame based heroes. The reflection and translucency of the fire parts is awesome. With four smaller flame parts that can fit around figure limbs and three larger aura-like fire effects, these pieces work well on many levels.
I realized I had to make an all new system to review effect parts and dioramas because the model for figures doesn't quite fit the bill.
Aesthetic: 3/3 These are well made, sculpted pieces that bring out a fiery emotive feeling. There is a nice gradient from deeper reds to brighter oranges in the larger effects pieces, while the smaller ones are more of a dark to light orange. They are made with a very reflective finish that brings to life the idea of fire in plastic form very well.
Durability: 1/1 These are very solid bits of plastic. They are sturdy, weighted well, and even the fringes of the fire effects feel like it would take a lot to break or shatter them with a drop (not that I'm trying it!)
Functionality: 3/3 This is a pretty good set for functionality. The large parts create a good fire aura around a figure. The smaller pieces can be attached around weapons, fists and legs to create some charging up firepower effects. Additionally, some ball joints in these allow them to move a bit, and you can swap them between each other.
Verdict: 6/6 These are great effects that I think will apply to a range of figures with various fire abilities or surrounded by any kind of flame! I have no issue highly recommending these for photography and use in a range of figures. I would however have liked it if they included one very large straight up fireball that could be cast from hands, mouth etc. Lots of characters have this effect, especially in some of my favourite anime!
Nice wide and short effect (flame walls etc) |
This one is an odd one, but it kind of looks like a flaming phoenix effect. The mid joint is a ball joint! |
This is a favourite because of the height and also ball joint! |
These can all clip on to hands. arms etc but are smaller |
Not bad for the Firelord's son! |
He clearly needs some calming Jasmine tea |
Gokakyu no jutsu! |
"Susanoo!" |
